Elements to Include in an Academic Advisor Position Cover Letter

Your contact information must be full and correct, with multiple ways for the employment office and search committee to reach you.

While those may be included in the resume or CV, you want them to be easily accessible on every piece of correspondence. Don't make them search for it.

Include the position number, job posting number, or another specific position reference. This is an important element that will allow the human resources office to properly sort and classify your application.

You don't want your application sorted into the wrong pile or file. You also want to ensure they don't think it is a general application for any position.

If specific education and licensure are required for the position, include that in the cover letter. Some states require a license or certification for academic advisors, so be sure to research that for applying for a position in a different state. If you haven't yet gotten that credential, note that you are eligible or are filing for it.

Check the required education for the position and note your achievement in the cover letter. These two factors will be important for the employment office to consider your application. Make it easy for them to find them in the cover letter rather than having to search through the resume.

Be sure to proofread and check spelling and grammar in your cover letter. You can be sure that someone in the human resources office or on the search committee cares deeply about such things. A single mistake could send your application to the bottom of the pile.

Letters and other correspondence should be edited to fit your personal situation.
